Ad spend / Golden Stiletto’s / ruling the world

So it’s official, online ad spend has overtaken TV. We’ve all been talking about it for what seems like forever but now the day hath come. At the Golden Stiletto Awards last night some innovative examples of advertising in the digital space were out in force, it seems there’s no end to the possibilities for this medium. Now we just need to see an improvement in measurement and digital really will be ready to take over the world.

Rare digital insight from a politician

I have to say this made me chuckle, I know it shouldnt, but it did!!!!!!!! what can I say sense of humour of a child!

Asked whether he used Twitter, Mr Cameron (thats Dave to many conservative party members)  said: “The trouble with Twitter, the instantness of it - too many twits might make a twat.”

See it here

At least we work in digital…

For those of you that work in digital advertising there’s a ray of sunshine today from Brand Republic who say that internet adspend is holding up better than predicted in these tumultuous times, while newspaper adspend continues to decline. Apparently global internet advertising will grow 10% this year due in part toits transparency, accountability and flexibility”. Take a look at the article which also has some interesting facts about which countries have the largest ad markets and most growth.

3 months or not 3 months?

Help for contracters

We are quite regularly asked by our freelancers if they are allowed to stay more than 3 months in the same contract?

After speaking to lawyers , accountants and the REC (the professional recruitment body) , the answer simply is YES.

So where did the 3 months maximum then change come from?

Well quite simply if you are with the same company in the same project doing the same role for more than 3 months you are more likely for the men in suits to ask you “are you actually offering a service? Or employed by them therefore shouldn’t you be a permanent member of staff and therefore I think we should look at your tax status….”

According to the REC you can stay in a contract for however long you would like as long as you can prove that you are offering a service , completing a project and not filling a fixed role or position.Really for most of you who freelance you are brought in to work on a project or a section of an account, this means you are fine (although the Government can really ask you questions whenever they like really).

For more details on this, or how it affects your IR35 status do contact the REC »

How many hours…..

Is it just me but did the latest research reported by NMA that 1 in 7 people are spending up to 5 hours , FIVE HOURS , on social networks seem like a rather long time

FIVE HOURS man FIVE HOURS  ………………….

I re-read the Dr Seuss book over weekend “Oh the places you’ll go” and thought I would share its first lines, as for many, times are quite difficult I thought this would send a little cheer. If you’re not a great Dr Seuss fan and would like some more detailed advice in the digital media job market then do give me a call, or drop me an email eleanor@roome.co.uk

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

If you would like to read more then his book is available, well its pretty much available anywhere, I first read it in JAPAN!!!!!
