Great Glug Gathering

WE had a brilliant night last night with lots of excellent creative people, THANKS to the fantastic illustrators and designers who spent the day creating some brilliant visuals at the Queen of Hoxton.

Looking forward to the next GLUG

Roome sponsor Glug!

Hopefully some of you will already have signed up to come along to the 11th Glug, happening this Thursday 25th June from 6pm at The Queen of Hoxton. Roome Consulting are very happy to be sponsoring the event by way of bangers and other fine fodder for the BBQ on the roof, and we hope there will be even more random chat and merriment than ever. To add to the fun the Glug boys have invited eight illustrators who’ll be working on the stairwell and roof creating bespoke t-shirts, so bring along a blank to get some free original art-T’s to take home. With that and the special Glug punch on offer, it’s shaping up to be a pretty special evening…

Roome and Glug

Roome with a view

I wanted to say a BIG THANKYOU to everyone who has recommended people to us, a huge part of our ability to give advice and point people in the right direction is based on Roomes partners generosity in refering us to their community.

This year we have met some great people through recommendations and continue to meet stars of the digital market.

We are staying small and staying focused on giving advice and helping those who need direction in these tough times, both individuals and agencies.

The reason I am writing the thank you down, is that the year is galloping away and the thank yous aren’t sometimes loud enough to be heard over all the hard work. so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Happy Easter

Hope everyone has atleast 1 easteregg, does 1 hunt and atleast 1 long lie in………… HAPPY EASTER egg

Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race

Goat Race

On the same day as the boat race (29th March) London’s going to host a new event - The Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race ;) When Roome chums - Ant, Simeon & Anne told me their idea, I said where the hell are you going to get the goats from?!? Well luckily the nice folks at Spitalfields City Farm (just off Brick Lane) don’t mind them racing a couple of theirs around a field. In return the £3 admission fee will be going toward the up keep of their urban farm project.

THE EVENT:
2 actual real live goats, one representing Oxford and one representing Cambridge, race a tough, meandering course lined with cheering spectators. Then on to the pub for cheap or possibly free (trying to sort out a booze deal now) drinks and music.

AMUSEMENTS:
The Official Goat Race Bookie and Sweepstake
Enter the Goat Wrestling tournament (I’ve no idea wtf this is)
Goatee competition

TIME & PLACE:
Spitalfields City Farm E1, near Brick Lane - map »
Sunday March 29thGet there 2.30pm
Race 3.30pm
After party from 4.30pm (in the pub)

DRESS CODE:
Strictly: Black Tie, Rowing lycra, boat club jackets and ties, or goat.

ADMISSION:
£3 on the door charge, all proceeds go to a Spitalfields City Farm Charity.

GET INVOLVED:
If you would like to attend, or get involved in any other way (you could turn up with a few metres of bunting at least), head over to the Goat Race Facebook page »

Organised by - Team Magic-Ish (Anne Hopkins, Simeon Rose & Anthony Goh). Graphics by Roome’s own designer/illustrator - Cookie.

3 months or not 3 months?

Help for contracters

We are quite regularly asked by our freelancers if they are allowed to stay more than 3 months in the same contract?

After speaking to lawyers , accountants and the REC (the professional recruitment body) , the answer simply is YES.

So where did the 3 months maximum then change come from?

Well quite simply if you are with the same company in the same project doing the same role for more than 3 months you are more likely for the men in suits to ask you “are you actually offering a service? Or employed by them therefore shouldn’t you be a permanent member of staff and therefore I think we should look at your tax status….”

According to the REC you can stay in a contract for however long you would like as long as you can prove that you are offering a service , completing a project and not filling a fixed role or position.Really for most of you who freelance you are brought in to work on a project or a section of an account, this means you are fine (although the Government can really ask you questions whenever they like really).

For more details on this, or how it affects your IR35 status do contact the REC »

For those of you struggling to find the time to design or update your portfolio I thought this might be of interest.

You post your work and they beautifully put it together.

A little cheer for Monday morning

oh the places you’ll go - Dr, Seuss

I re-read the Dr Seuss book over weekend “Oh the places you’ll go” and thought I would share its first lines, as for many, times are quite difficult I thought this would send a little cheer. If you’re not a great Dr Seuss fan and would like some more detailed advice in the digital media job market then do give me a call, or drop me an email eleanor@roome.co.uk

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

If you would like to read more then his book is available, well its pretty much available anywhere, I first read it in JAPAN!!!!!
